Are you passionate about the well-being of animals and their vital role in our world? Look no further than the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Nicosia, a leading institution dedicated to promoting One Health – the interconnectedness of human, animal, and the environmental health – and shaping the future of veterinary medicine.

To offer a deeper insight into our approach, values, and the unique aspects of our School, we invite you to join our Open Day Events in Athens on the 21st of June 2023 at the King George Hotel Athens, Syntagma, at 06:30pm, and in Thessaloniki on the 22nd of June 2023 at Electra Palace Thessaloniki, Aristotelous Square, also at 06:30pm. During these events, you will have the opportunity to learn about our 5-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree programme designed for high school graduates, meet our professors and members of the admissions department, and get answers to all your questions.

Leading the way is the esteemed Dean, Professor Michael Herrtage, an eminent figure in the field of veterinary science who served the Deanship of the Veterinary School of the University of Cambridge for 14 years. With an extensive background and expertise, Prof Herrtage’s vision is to establish our school as a beacon of excellence in veterinary medicine throughout the region.
What sets us apart? Our EU-accredited degree programme guarantees the highest standards of education and opens doors to exciting opportunities across Europe and beyond. From the very first year, students gain invaluable hands-on experience through early exposure to animal care, laying the foundation for a successful veterinary career. Moreover our anatomy laboratory provides hands-on experience, including dissection techniques with fresh specimens, and cutting-edge Anatomage technology for immersive exploration of virtual animal anatomy in incredible detail.

Aligned with the rigorous requirements of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) of UK, our curriculum emphasizes the acquisition of Day One Skills and Competences. This ensures that our graduates possess the practical knowledge and abilities essential for immediate practice upon completion of their studies. We are excited to share that we have recently signed a Cooperation Agreement with one of the leading institutions in the field of veterinary medicine, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange to enhance the educational experience for our students. Additionally, we’ve entered into a commitment agreement with one of the top Veterinary School in US, the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, further expanding our network and enriching our educational resources.

But that’s not all! At the University of Nicosia, we believe in nurturing the holistic growth of our students. That’s why we’ve assembled a devoted student success team, from personal tutors to career advisors, who provide unwavering support throughout your journey from student to veterinarian. They are dedicated to guiding you towards achieving your goals and unlocking your true potential.
And let’s not forget the incredible advantages of studying at the University of Nicosia. Set against the backdrop of the Mediterranean, this idyllic location boasts more than 300 days of sunshine each year. During your study breaks you can immerse yourself in the great outdoors, enjoy the beautiful beaches, and explore the rich history of this captivating island. The harmonious blend of an exceptional education and an unbeatable environment makes for an unforgettable student experience.
So, if you’re ready to embark on a journey that combines your passion for animals, the pursuit of knowledge, and the promotion of One Health, join our Open Day events in Athens and Thessaloniki and find out more about the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus!

How would you convince a client about the need for dental scaling for his dog? Will you talk to him about the benefits of dental scaling or will you emphasize the health risks of leaving the dog untreated? What would work best?

You know that your success as a veterinary business owner depends on your ability to convince your clients. The secret to convincing even the most difficult clients is to make sure that your message appeals to them both on an intellectual and on an emotional level. This will make them far more receptive.

Do you remember the time when you wanted to buy a car? What did the car sales man say to you that triggered your decision to buy this specific car?

Did he convince you by telling you that this car is fast, prestigious or sexy, or did he emphasize that the car doesn’t use much gas, doesn’t cost much to maintain and is particularly safe in case of an accident?

Some of you were convinced because of the features that you found attractive in this particular car. Some of you chose to buy this car to avoid the risk of high maintenance costs or injury in an accident.

Some people feel most comfortable moving toward something that excites them. They tend to be risk takers. We say that they use a toward meta programme. Others tend to be cautious and protective. They see the world as a more dangerous place. They prefer to take actions away from risks rather than toward exciting things. We say that they use an away from meta programme.

Meta programmes are mental patterns that we use in order to filter and interpret the information that we receive. Only through understanding these mental patterns can you expect to get your message across, whether you are trying to convince someone to buy a car or dental scaling for their dog.

Why is this example relevant to you and your client?

Because if you are selling a service or a product, you can promote it in two ways, by what it does or by what it doesn’t do.

I know what you may be thinking now: ‘’how do I know if my client has a toward or away meta programme?’’

To find out ask your client what he wants for his pet’s health. Does he tell you what he wants or does he tell you what he doesn’t want?

If he tells you that he wants his pet to be healthy, active and live a long and happy life he is probably using a toward meta programme, so speak to him more about the positive outcome and the benefits of the treatment.

If he talks to you about his concerns that his pet will grow old, become less agile or suffer from this or that health issue he is probably using an away meta programme so talk to him more about the risks and dangers of not doing dental scaling.

Remember your success depends greatly on your ability to convince your clients. Next time a pet owner walks in your practice ask the right questions and listen more closely to the language he is using and the clues that he is giving you. You will then know what to say that will appeal to him both intellectually and emotionally. And he will be much more receptive to your message!

– The treatment failed because the owner did not follow your recommendations

– You are not sure how to explain to the owner the importance of clinical nutrition

– Even if the pet owners initially purchase the diet you recommended they very often fail to re-purchase

– You are wondering why the owner did exactly the opposite of what you recommended, even though you gave very detailed instructions

Your four-legged patients do not walk in the Clinic on their own! They come with their owner! You know that your success as a veterinary professional depends on your ability to convince the pet owner and increase compliance!

Clear communication far outweighs cost as a driver of client retention. The level of medicine you provide will not be appreciated if you can’t make it understandable and relevant for the pet owner. It is essential to describe the value of your medicine in a manner that the pet owner can understand.

Communication in Clinical Practice was discussed in this interactive seminar that took place on March 30&31 with more than 50 participants in Nicosia and Limmasol. The seminar was organized by the Pancyprian Veterinary Association with the support of Improve International Cyprus.

Vets on the Balkans celebrated their 3rd Anniversary on 24th May, 2018. The celebration was part of the 2018 Annual Congress of the Romanian Society of Feline Medicine, in Bucharest.

Vets on the Balkans is an online veterinary journal. The team has a goal to connect the veterinarians from the Balkans, to help them share their knowledge and experience, to improve cooperation and ultimately to elevate the standard of veterinary care in the region.

Luba Gangeva, founder of Vets on the Balkans is deeply convinced that we can all improve through cooperation. The motto of the journal is “Sharing is Caring”.

Luba is also the recipient of WSAVA Hill’s next generation award in 2017, for her contribution to the veterinary profession through Vets on the Balkans!

Luba graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Forestry University in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2011. She also holds a Masters Degree in Infectious Diseases from the Trakia University, Bulgaria. Two years ago she moved to Bucharest in Romania. In 2015 she launched Vets on The Balkans – www.balkanvets.com.

The journal very soon became greatly popular: 9,000 unique visitors and 12,000 visits in the first year from launch. More than 90 cases have been presented so far in the journal at a high professional level.

The journal is a media partner of EERVC ( Eastern European Veterinary Conference), SRDV (Romanian Veterinary Dermatology Society), SRMF ( Romanian Society of Feline Medicine), AMVAC/ RoSAVA (Romanian Small Animal Association), TSAVA ( Turkish Small Animal Association), CSAS Croatian Small Animal Section, RoVECCS (Romanian veterinary and critical care association), Romanian Association of Ophthalmology and SAVAB (Belgian Small Animal Veterinary Association)

In 2017, Luba started a new project named “Travel and Learn with Vets on The Balkans”. The project aims at supporting the veterinarians from the Balkans in upgrading their knowledge and experience in veterinary medicine. Through the program they have the opportunity to visit and practice in different clinics across different countries.

For more information about Luba’s inspiring work, visit www.balkanvets.com.

A seminar held on March 3 & 4, organized by IVSA Thessaloniki and IVSA Thessaly in cooperation with Gerolymatos International Vet in Greece.

How often have you encountered any of the following problems?

– Your patient on the examination table is not cooperative, making your job difficult and even dangerous

– The anxiety of the owner aggravates the anxiety of the animal

– The owner does not follow your instructions and then complains that the treatment is ineffective

– You are not sure how to convince the owner of the importance of medication or clinical nutrition

Elaborating on all these issues to an audience of over 150 veterinary students were speakers Christos Karagiannis and Elli Kalemtzaki, who shared their most important tips and techniques for better managing patients’ behavior and for obtaining owners’ compliance.

Skilled communication with patient and owner allows veterinary practitioners to:

– have more cooperative patients and clients

– be more convincing in recommending a treatment or product to owners

– improve the compliance of owners and thus improve the health of patients

The invited speakers:

Christos Karagiannis, DVM, MSc, Diplomate ECAWBM (BM), MRCVS, is the first Greek specialist in veterinary behavioural medicine and one of only 35 vets in Europe with this specialty.

Elli Kalemtzaki, DVM, ICF Accredited Coach, NLP Certified Practitioner, is a veterinary consultant with a vision to help veterinarians create a more profitable veterinary practice, secure lifelong clients, and enjoy a work life balance.

How often do we come across someone who is smart, yet not doing well in their job? Most people attribute success to intelligence, but this is not necessarily the case. Emotional intelligence which is the ability to know and manage one’s emotions, as well as the emotions of others is a proven key success factor in the workplace. And it has a direct impact not only on our performance, but also our ability to communicate, to lead others, to deal with work pressure and to derive more pleasure from our work.

A Seminar on Emotional Intelligence was organized by the Estonian Small Animal Veterinary Association in Pärnu, Estonia on 18 November. More than 60 veterinary business owners and their staff participated in this interactive seminar. The invited speaker was Elli Kalemtzaki, DVM, ICF Certified Coach, NLP Practitioner.

During the seminar we explored different aspects of Emotional Intelligence in the veterinary practice and how we can use it for better communication with clients and team members, better service to clients and patients and improved job satisfaction.

The workshop consisted of the following 4 parts:

Three most common mistakes in communication with the pet owner

Understanding how different communicating styles influence the way we interact with others and practical tips to improve communication with your team and clients. It is a fact that the way we receive, process and transmit information varies between individuals. In this very interactive session we explored common mistakes that we make when we communicate. Participants identified their communicating style and how they can adapt effectively their message to different communicating styles.

The opportunity behind the obstacle: Dealing with anger and complaints

As companion animal veterinary practitioners you will sooner or later be faced with pet owner complaints. How can you manage the complaints of pet owners, but more than that to use the complaint as an opportunity to increase loyalty? During this presentation we discussed potential obstacles in managing pet owner complaints.

Crucial Conversations: How to deliver bad news

Rocky died during surgery. His owner is at the waiting room and you need to announce the news. Delivering bad news is never an easy task, in fact it is one of the most difficult conversations for any member of your team. Some clients may react to bad news with anger or blame. Participants learned how to deliver bad news skillfully and make sure that the pet owner’s concerns are addressed and emotions supported.

Dealing with Stress in Clinical Practice

Do you feel you are caught in the busy trap? Maybe you are stressed and think that there are not enough hours in the day to complete your job duties? We can’t avoid long days, emotional clients, and the pressure of dealing with sick patients. The phenomenon of stress in the veterinary profession is recognized worldwide. During this session we explored the main stresors in the workplace and what changes we can make to increase our stress tolerance and develop coping strategies.
